THE "OTHER" BAPTISMAL SITE

Where the Jordan River flows out of the Sea of Galilee is a site that is known as the Yardenit, or "Little Jordan".  It is a tranquil place where baptisms take place all year round.  In fact, we witnessed a baptism of 2 women, even though the temperature was in the high 30's.  COLD!!!

We had prayer and reading.  Then, I touched the water, feeling as though I was somehow connecting with Jesus and John in their time together.

Ginger and I got a rare photo together.

Later in the day, we visited another Baptismal site.  I asked Pastor Rick if John had been in both places.

Here's where I felt betrayed ...... much like when I learned there was no Santa Claus.....

Turns out this site is NOT the site of John's baptisms.  It is a park run by the Israeli parks department, and simply exists as a tourist trap.  It is on the tour because, well..... it is.  But, it has NO significance to our pilgrimage.

I was crushed.  To be disappointed is an understatement.  After processing this for a couple of days, I have concluded that, while I feel that what is most important is our own hearts.  Any place, even a place such as the "fake baptism", that incites productive spiritual reflection is a worthwhile.  In a way, every place on this earth can be a spiritual place because every place is made by and a gift from God.

I am reminded of the story that Pastor Chris has told us many times about CS Lewis leaving the pub with his friends and, being approached by a beggar, Lewis gives him money.  When Lewis's friends berate and criticize him, he responds "my giving is between God and me....how this man uses the gift is between God and him".  Feeling the presence of Jesus while visiting the "fake baptism" was between God and me.  How the Israeli Governmental officials deal with the Baptismal park, the misconceptions it creates, and the money it makes is between God and them.
